How FMG involved the whole organisation in our innovation process

With the goal of being a truly innovative force in the media industry, encouraging innovation within the organisation is a high priority at FMG.

One of the initiatives we have taken so far occurred two weeks ago at FMG’s annual kick-off (corona friendly this time!). The results were too good not to share them, but we also want to share how we got there so that you can replicate our workshop in your organisation.

The four topics covered during the day were:

  • How to use data and information to make internal operations more efficient
  • How to reduce our waste and become more sustainable
  • How to handle the potential future through a scenario analysis (which you can read more about here)
  • And last but not least, all of FMG’s employees came together in a workshop to discuss how we can help our partners to grow, innovate and increase their revenue. This was the part that truly made us realise the in-house power of our FMG team.

As CEO Linus Wennerström stated by the end of the day: “When we created this workshop we expected embryos, but you’ve surprised us with well thought-out business ideas”.

AR shopping, shopvertising, online midwifes and new innovative in-app chat functions are some of the ideas that surfaced during the workshop. Some of the ideas were so relevant and thought out that we have already been able to take them to the concerned partners for further discussion on how to implement them. A majority of the other ideas planted seeds for new innovations that are currently being discussed in different areas of the organisation.

From our experience there are a few key factors to creating an innovation workshop that generates valuable ideas:

Step 1: Create a fun and engaging atmosphere around the workshop

Step 2: Put up clear frames about what areas you want to generate innovative ideas in

Step 3: Think about the groups: Be sure to mix different areas of the organisation that complement each other, for example sales and tech.

Step 4: Make the groups small: 3-4 people per group in the first stages is a good size.

Step 5: Set a clear time limit, maximum 45-60 minutes per session to keep the focus high

Step 6: Create an incentive – hand out prizes for the best ideas

A good thing to think about is how to collect the ideas afterwards. Have the participants write them down either online or on paper.

Finally, don’t forget snacks and breaks. It might be something you take for granted, but high energy levels are crucial here.

Don’t hesitate to contact our Head of Innovation if you and your company want to innovate together with us.

Good luck!
